Contra Torpedeiro
Pará – Artificial wreck of the brazilian navy
Built in 1942 for the U.S
Navy and named USS Guest – DD 472 , this vessel was transfered to the
Brazilian navy in 1959 after four years of duty in the U.S Navy in the
world war two. With 114 meters of lenght and 2.050 tons, the USS Guest was renamed Contra Torpedeiro Pará
- D 27.
The Transference happened by
leasing and in August of 1973 the CT Pará was officially a vessel of the
Brazilian Navy. The CT Pará was a Fletcher class that in Brazil is known as
Tipo 600. After nineteen years of excellent duties made for the Brazilian
navy, the Pará was released in 1978. In 1983 another vessel crossed the
Pará´s fate: The submarine Ceará – S-14. Also a former U.S Navy property
when it was built in 1944, the USS Amberjack – SS 522 was delivered to the
Brazilian Navy in 1973 e renamed Ceará.
These submarine has an
outstanding record on the files of the Brazilian Navy and it win four TORPEDEX
prizes.
In February, 22th, 1983
the S-Ceará headed to the South of Cape Frio Lighthouse to exercises.
The target ?
The former Contra Torpedeiro Pará.
The S-Ceará hit the hull
of the Contra Torpedeiro Pará with two torpedoes causing the sink of
the ship.
The exact position of this
shipwreck it is not of my knowledge.According to some informations, this
exercises was realized at 80 miles of Cape Frio. This distance, that seems to
far from any attempts made by wreck divers doesn´t mean that the wreckage is
80 miles from shore. It could be less.
Nowadays, brazilians
technical wreck divers are crossing distances bigger than 20 miles to do
some dives and we expect that in the next few years, these divers reacheven more far distances to find new shipwrecks.
And the Contra Torpedeiro
Pará is a great option !
